Peterborough United 0-3 Birmingham City

Birmingham City - Garry OConnorIf anyone needed an introduction to any of Blues new signing then Olivier Kapo and Garry O’Connor certainly let the 4,387 at London Road last night know who they were.

Kapo several times had the crowd gasping in the first half with delicate touches with his sweet left foot. O’Connor may not be a prolific goal scorer but he is a centre forward who has a touch of the Bob Hatton about him and with Jerome’s pace along side him, made up a threatening duo up front.

The first half was a stop go affair with Blues passing far too square. When they did get the ball forward and wide then Blues looked more dangerous. The final ball was never quite there and Blues looked frustrated. The best chance came midway though the first half when Kapo shook his hips and launched a 60 yard pass to O’Connor. The big jock turned inside and fired a goal bound effort which just clipped a defender and was deflected wide.

The home side had Blues in some distress as the pace of Mclean in particular worried Blues centre pairing of Jaidi and Taylor.

The second half was a different game with Blues at last clicking into gear. A break down the right by the impressive Larsson was followed by a cross ball into the box. O’Connor cleverly dummied and gave time and space to Kapo. The French man still had plenty to do and unleashed a pile drive from the left hand corner of the box and it flew past Tyler into the top right of the goal. A superb effort of remarkable quality.

Moments later Nafti fed O’Connor down the right and he flicked the ball over a defenders head and his gentle volley cross found Jerome who headed home. Jerome almost set up O’Connor with a cushion header but it was just out of reach. Reacting quickly O’Connor turned the ball back into the path of Larsson and the Swede rifled the ball past a hapless Tyler.

Blues looked likely to run up a cricket score but the Posh defence held out. Kapo and Jerome were replaced by Forssell and Mcsheffrey. This pair looked as though they were miffed at being left on the bench, and were keen to impress. Macca was looking back to his best as he and Forssell combined but the Finn’s shot whistled wide.

A Mcsheffrey free kick broke through the wall and Forssell looking razor sharp latched on to the loose ball but Tyler managed to thwart him at the second attempt.

In the dying moments Crowe took advantage of some shabby Blues defending and should have netted from 15 yards. Doyle pulled off a fine save with his legs. Worryingly in injury time Parnaby went off with an ankle knock.

This was Blues most impressive display so far but the fans need to see what the other new signings, De Ridder, Schmitz and Gaaly have to offer. While three or four senior players were sent with the stiffs to Dagenham, Damian Johnson was not included and nor was Mat Sadler. With ten days to go before the season starts we don’t have a fit left back.

Posh: Tyler, Low (Keates 65), Blackett, Westwood, Lee, Newton (Crow 60), Hyde (Strachan 71), Mclean, Boyd (Morgan 60), Gain (Whelpdale 65), Day (Charnock 71).

Blues: Doyle, Kelly, Parnaby, Taylor, Jaidi, Larsson, Nafti, Kapo (Mcsheffrey 66), Muamba (Lea 81). O’Connor, Jerome (Forssell 66).
